Our ClientsThe Times of Israel
Case study

Six months before launch, we were already building it. Fifteen years later, we're still running it.

The Times of Israel is one of the largest English-language news websites in the world. Since August 2011 – six months before the site published its first byline – every line of code, every page design, every server, and every defended-against attack has been ours.

01The setup

A digital-first newsroom, before "digital-first" was a phrase.

In 2011, English-language coverage of Israel and the Jewish world was dominated by sites that had bolted online editions onto print operations. David Horovitz wanted something different: an entirely digital newsroom, designed from the first byline for the way people actually read online – fast, mobile, deeply interlinked, capable of holding an active conversation with its readers.

There was no print legacy to protect. No old templates to retrofit. Just a clear brief: build a serious international news publication from the ground up, ready to compete on day one with established players that had been online for a decade.

We came on in August 2011. The site launched in February 2012.

02What we built

From the homepage to the servers – every layer of the publication.

The platform
A custom content-management system built around what editors actually do at speed: promoting the right story, demoting another without rebuilding the page, switching the homepage layout in seconds when a breaking event lands. Salamandra – our content-display engine – powers every page choice an editor makes here.
The design
Identity, typography, and a homepage architecture that respects both the editor's prerogative to shape the day and the reader's expectation of a coherent visual language across thousands of stories.
The blog platform
A publishing system that lets external writers publish to a managed corner of the site. Within a year, more than 1,500 contributors were posting through it. By 2021 the number had grown past 9,000.
Sister editions
Over the years we've also built sister sites for The Times of Israel – the French edition that runs today, and the Arabic and Persian editions, since retired.
The infrastructure
Hosting, CDN, security, monitoring – scaled, in steps, from zero readers to a top-50 global news site. We've kept the site live through traffic spikes that move readers by the millions per hour, and through some of the most active periods of hostile attention any Israeli publication has faced.
The reader products
A newsletter that now reaches 230,000 daily subscribers. A podcast platform handling more than one million monthly listens. A reader-support program – The Times of Israel Community – that became the publication's most loyal audience layer.

In October and November 2023, The Times of Israel became the fastest-growing news website in the world for two consecutive months. November alone saw 56.3 million visits – a 429% jump year-on-year – and the site entered the world's top 50 news sites for the first time, at 42nd.

The infrastructure held.

04Voices
"
There's no shortage of developing companies worldwide. But there aren't all that many firms that both build websites and understand the demands of journalism.

Every system we've added in the last decade – the bloggers platform, the newsletter, the community fundraising, the podcast – RGB built. It feels less like working with an outside agency and more like having a digital team that just happens to be down the road.

05The partnership today

Fifteen years on, the relationship looks like this.

Every editorial decision that touches the website – new sections, new features, redesigns, election-night dashboards, war-coverage interfaces – runs through our team alongside the newsroom's. We attend the strategy meetings. We know the editors by name. We get the 2am call when something looks wrong on the homepage in Sydney even though everyone in Jerusalem is asleep.

When the editorial team wanted a fundraising mechanism for reader support, we built The Times of Israel Community. When podcasting became central, we built the audio infrastructure. When the war started, we scaled the servers, hardened the security, and kept the site live through the largest traffic event in its history.

We don't just maintain The Times of Israel. We help shape what it becomes next.
